Remote Access: Introduction

Remote access is available to staff whose assigned offices are in the Palais des Nations (UNOG, UNCTAD, UNECE, etc.) or at UNHCR

How to use OpenAthens

Getting Started

Most* UN Staff automatically have access to our new remote access system ("OpenAthens").
Read the brief summary below, or visit the Help page for more information.

*UNCHR staff must use Personal Accounts, which can be requested here.

You will be able to access most of our electronic collections through links in our e-resources guide or through the library's Global Search catalogue (note: access via Global Search requires an additional log in, which is explained below.)

Databases that are available via remote access can be identified by the globe icon next to their name: Remote access available for UNOG and UNHCR staff.

Once you click on the hyperlinked database name, you will be taken to the log in page for our remote access system, most commonly referred to as "OpenAthens"*. Once logged in, you will get full access to the Library’s subscribed content in the database.

Please note that during that same session, you will only be prompted to log in the first time. You can visit several databases without a need to log in again. But if you close or change internet browsers, then the session with the proxy server will be stopped.

The OpenAthens Sign-In Page

Note: If you are on site (i.e. on the grounds of the Palais des Nations) then the system will recognise your IP address and bypass the sign in page.

If you are off site, then you will be automatically redirected to the sign in page when you click on one of our links.
Although if you wish then you may also sign in via the MyAthens user portal.
  • Staff with an @un.org, @unctad.org, or @ohchr.org email address should choose the top option: "UN Staff with @un.org email"
  • UNHCR staff and ILC members & assistants (or others) should choose the bottom option, "Personal accounts"

Remote access to electronic resources via Global Search

Global Search: https://libraryresources.unog.ch/global

A-to-Z List of Electronic Journals: https://libraryresources.unog.ch/e-journals

In order to view electronic search results with links for remote access, you will need to be signed in to your Global Search account.

A librarian can provide you with your own Global Search login details, which may be different from your Remote Access login details.

Before you run a search in Global Search or the A-to-Z list, click on “Sign In” in the top right-hand corner of the screen and enter your Global Search login details. Resources that are available in electronic format will appear with a tab labelled “Online” clicking on most (not all) of the links from the online tab will allow you to access the resource using your “remote access” login details.

Questions

At any time, if you have questions about how to access our e-resources, or if you need access to particular journal articles from resources to which we do not offer remote access (such as the legal database LexisNexis), then please do not hesitate to contact us.  We will do our best to answer your questions and help you find the information you need.

If you have any colleagues who are interested in gaining access to the UNLibrary Geneva’s electronic resources, please do encourage them to contact us at library-gva@un.org or at the Ask A Librarian portal.
