UNODA supports multilateral efforts aimed at achieving the ultimate goal of general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control. It promotes the goal of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and the strengthening of the disarmament regimes in respect to other weapons of mass destruction, chemical and biological weapons as well as conventional arms. UNODA has developed transparency measures and confidence-building instruments to promote disarmament and is engaged in two funds that focus specifically on conventional arms: the United Nations Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Reduction (UNSCAR), and the Saving Lives Entity (SALIENT).
The Conventional Weapons Branch (CAB):
CAB focuses its efforts on conventional arms, meaning weapons other than weapons of mass destruction. It is responsible for substantive conference support on the UN Programme of Action on small arms, the Arms Trade Treaty process, and the UN transparency registers. CAB chairs the UN-internal coordination mechanism on small arms (CASA).
UNMAS works towards eliminating the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war, and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and in support of peace operations, as well as through the development of standards, policies, and norms.
