Conference Primer: Disarmament: 2023

The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (also known as Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, Ottawa Convention, or Mine Ban Treaty) is the cornerstone of the international effort to end the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines.

The 2023 Intersessional Meetings are to take place from 19 to 21 June 2023 at the headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva with participation of hundreds of delegates representing States and international and non-governmental organisations which work towards a world free of anti-personnel mines.

Upon the invitation of the Secretary-General, the following Member States have nominated experts to participate in the work of the Group: Australia; Brazil; Canada; Chile; China; Cuba; Egypt; France; Germany; Hungary; India; Iran (Islamic Republic of); Israel; Japan; Morocco; Pakistan; Philippines; Republic of Korea; Russian Federation; South Africa; Sweden; United Arab Emirates; United Kingdom; United States.

The Working Group will be chaired by H.E. Ambassador Flavio Soares Damico of Brazil, with H.E. Ambassador Camille Petit of France and Mr. Irakli Jgenti of Georgia as Vice-Chairs.

The Guide to Implementing the Biological Weapons Convention has been developed by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), with the support of the European Union and Norway and the contributions of a wide range of BWC experts, to assist States Parties in their efforts to implement the Convention at the national level.

The 2023 Meeting of the High Contracting to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) decided that "The Group of Governmental Experts of the High Contracting Parties related to emerging technologies in the area of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), for a duration of 10 days, from 6 to 10 March 2023, and from 15 to 19 May 2023" (CCW/MSP/2022/7, paragraph 37 (b)). The Meeting also adopted the relevant cost estimates for 2023 as contained in CCW/MSP/2022/5.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has made a major push to engage and empower young people, recognizing their participation as essential for identifying new solutions that will secure the breakthroughs that our world urgently needs.

To that end, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), with generous financial support from the Government of Germany, are calling on young people to apply for the 2nd edition of the United Nations Youth Champions for Disarmament Training Programme – an innovative learning programme aimed at empowering youth to work for disarmament in their communities.

A policy developed jointly by these institutions (Mine Action and Effective Coordination: the United Nations Inter-Agency Policy) guides the division of labor within the United Nations.

Summarizes developments and trends in 2021 on key issues of multilateral consideration at the internationaland regional levels.
